C. Auguste Dupin, the protagonist, is the forefather of all great detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Philip Marlowe. Different from Poe's terror or horror-laden tales, the story nonetheless abounds in strange occurrences and horrific depictions.
