Založil ji Johann Georg Cotta (1631-1692), který si v roce 1659 vzal Euphrosinu Brunn (činná 1659), vdovu po nakladateli Philibertu Brunnovi (1626-1658). V roce 1810 bylo sídlo firmy přesunuto do Stuttgartu (Německo). V letech 1889 až 1977 pokračovala v činnosti firma J.-G.-Cotta'sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger.
