This alphabetical encyclopaedia of art in German provides structured information on artists - their work, influence on their respective cultural sphere, dates, contacts made in the course of their career, sources and literature. A precise reference system is included to facilitate rapid access to further details. Each article provides details of an artist's life, development and the characteristics of his or her art. In addition, data on the works themselves, written personal statements, important exhibitions, as well as a bibliography and references to unpublished sources are included. This project is under the patronage of the Comit'e International d'Histoire de l'Art (C.I.H.A.) and is sponsored by the German Ministry of the Interior on a regular basis. The encyclopaedia will ultimately cover 500,000 entries in 60 volumes and contain details of some 800,000 painters, graphic artists, sculptors, architects and applied arts practitioners.
